RAM: A Patent for a Three-Row Pickup Truck

Although it may seem far-fetched on paper, the idea of a three-row pickup truck is far from bad. There are many SUVs on the market that offer this feature, but options are more limited when it comes to pickup trucks. At best, you can find up to six seats inside the cab when there is no console. However, this is usually found only in the base models.

It turns out that the American manufacturer has been considering offering a three-row pickup truck for quite some time now. In fact, RAM reportedly filed its patent more than 7 months ago. The manufacturer simply waited until July to make the official announcement.

For Practicality

I have already seen pickup trucks with six doors on the road that were entirely designed by their owners, and I thought the idea was great. However, that’s not exactly what we’re talking about here. RAM's concept makes use of the space provided by modern full-size cabs. Thus, the second row would be moved forward by a few dozen centimeters to allow for the addition of seats that can be deployed as needed. In fact, it’s quite similar to the rear seats found in some small pickups about twenty years ago. Moreover, the seats can be folded up when not in use, increasing the cargo space inside the cab.

The idea is far from outlandish, but don’t expect to fit two adults in the back. This concept is clearly intended for children and for short trips as well. Nonetheless, the concept remains interesting. It could allow for the transport of up to 7 people, a major advantage for RAM, which would certainly stand out from the competition with this feature.

This concept would allow buyers who need both a pickup truck and a large SUV to combine the two into a single vehicle. In fact, it even replaces a minivan at this point.

Now, it remains to be seen whether other manufacturers will want to jump on board and offer something similar. Competition in the full-size pickup truck segment continues to intensify, and we have yet another example of this with RAM’s new concept.
